.. Johnson Stripped of Gold Medal

wpeCF.gif (2794 bytes)Canadian sprinter Ben Johnson set a new world record in the 100- meter dash. Two days later, however, mandatory tests showed that Johnson had been using anabolic steroids. He was stripped of his glory and an estimated $1 million in commercial contracts. His gold medal went to second- place finisher Carl Lewis.

Johnson had been suspect for years- his muscles were uncanny and his eyes were often yellow, a side effect of steroids- but he always passed drug tests. Johnson was suspended for two years. When he returned, distinctly smaller, he failed to run competitively. Two years later, he again resorted to illegal substances and was permanently barred from track.

.. Among other things, Snyder, 70, says the black athlete is "bred to be the better athlete because, this goes all the way to the Civil War when ... the slave owner would breed his big woman so that he would have a big black kid." Snyder later apologizes for the comments but his career as a broadcaster is over.

"Pistol Pete" Maravich Dies

Former Louisiana State and New Orleans Jazz star Pete Maravich is playing in a pickup basketball game in Pasadena, California, when he suddenly collapses and dies. He is just 40. Famous for his droopy socks and floppy hair, Maravich averaged 44.2 points a game at LSU, leading the nation in scoring three times, then played 10 years in the National Basketball Association, where he was the top scorer in 1977.
