Roseanne made a October 18, 1988 debut featuring the fat, feisty, feminist comedian Roseanne Barr. Playing a factory employed, joke- telling wife and mother, the actress injected a dose of realism into television's usually saccharin portrait of family life. The sitcom would enjoy a long run at the top of TVs ratings.

Don't Worry Be Happy

Bobby McFerrin in 1988 became famous on the ingratiating charm of a simple Calypso- influenced ditty called "Don't Worry, Be Happy." Released in July, the song sold more than ten million copies by the end of the year.
