Hollywood had the Oscars, Broadway the Tonys, TV the Emmys, and in 1958, the recording-arts industry got the Grammys. Largely a publicity stunt, the inaugural competition demonstrated middle-of-the-road musical taste. Frank Sinatra, nominated for twelve awards, received only one trophy- in the Best Album Cover category. Domenico Modugno won best record honors for "Volare."
