Physicist and humanist, Albert Einstein died at age 76.  In 1905 he published his Special Theory of Relativity and in 1915 his General Theory of Relativity - ideas that changed the world.

Sir Winston Churchill, now 80, submitted his resignation in an audience with Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace and then strode out of the palace through the cheering ranks of his countrymen.  Churchill will be succeeded as Prime Minister by Sir Anthony Eden.
