Hockey Teams Show up for '48 Winter Games Two American teams showed up, each claiming to be the real U.S. squad. One team was the affiliate club of the American Hockey Association, the other an entry by the Amateur Athletic Union. The IOC declared that both teams were ineligible. The hockey quagmire came close to bringing about an end to the 1948 Winter Games, as the USOC threatened to boycott the event if their sponsored AAU team was kept off the ice. The mayor of St. Moritz, in turn, threatened to cancel the festival if there were no Americans. In the end, there was no boycott and the AHA club participated - however, their fourth-place finish was wiped out soon after the Games ended. The IOC, feeling that hockey was more trouble than it was worth, removed the sport from the program.
