Dr. Amazing:

I am a 7th grade student in the central Ohio area.  I am working on a science project.  I was wondering if you could tell me the top ten methods of memory loss in humans.  I think it would add to my report to have a reference from a top physician in this field.  Also, I will give the class the internet address so they will look at your web page too.

Thanks a lot.

Lebeno.

Hi, Lebeno

By methods of memory loss, I assume you mean the causes of memory loss of material previously registered in memory.  There are not many.

1.  Brain disease, such as Parkinsonism, causes loss of memory.
2.  Brain injury can cause loss of memory.
3.  Older memories can be displaced by new memories.  What you had to eat last Thursday can be displaced in your mind by what you had to eat on Friday or Monday.
4.  Memories can fade away just by disuse.  The more your mind searches the past, the more memories will remain accessible.
5.  Memories can be distorted by the mind, so that the original memory can become something else, and the mind will believe the latter to be a true memory.

Then there a number of factors which can prevent observed material from being strongly registered into memory.

1.  Alcohol, marijuana and other drugs.
2.  Stress.
3.  Failure to make associations between new material and older remembered material.
4.  Failure to observe with intent to remember.
5.  Failure to organize material into categories or classifications.  Good note taking requires a good outline.
6.  Failure to repeat material - Repetition.
7.  Using only one of your senses instead of multiple senses to register information or material.  Reading aloud is better than silent reading for remembering.

8.  Mental deficiency.  Failure to have the mental capacity to remember in the first place.
9.  Interference by other sensory stimuli when one is trying to absorb information.
10. With aging, a person is slower in registering information into memory.   Although once in memory, it can be available for recall about as good as with a younger person.

Good luck to you.

Heather:

I have never worked with the hearing impaired.  You ask a very good
question.   For someone who would read suggestive words without distractions and who could focus 100% on the written word and who would have a good imagination, I do believe that it is possible that they could be hypnotized. Of course, it would have to be a state of high suggestability where the eyes remain open so that the subject could continue to read suggestive instructions.

If you want a book on how to hypnotize and information about hypnosis, I
believe that my book is the best one on the market.  It is now in its fifth printing.  You can order it through my website at www.memorysite.com/books

Basically, there are no dangers from hypnotism unless the subject is in the hands of an unscrupulous hypnotist.  There are a multitude of benefits.

Good luck to you.

Hello Dr. Amazing

My name is Vasanth Siva and I am a student at Council Rock High School in
Newtown, PA.  I found your webpage in a search on hypnotism.  I am doing
a paper on hypnotism and I would like to ask a few questions on hypnosis.  If you have the time, please try and give me brief answers to the following questions:

1.What kind of strange experiences have you encountered while experimenting with hypnosis on others?  --  The most interesting/exciting was when I regressed people to their early childhood and even into their mother's uterus.  I would disassociate their writing hand from their conscious mind and have them write descriptions of what they were feeling, etc.

2.Why is hypnosis effective in the field of medicine?  --
Because it can replace anesthesia for many operations.  Some people cannot
tolerate anesthesia.  In psychotherapy, it allows the patient to relive
repressed memories so that the psychiatrist can deal with those that are the cause of the patient's distressed mental condition.  It can make pill taking easier.  It can reduce anxiety and phobias.  It can reduce pain.

3.What kind of problems have you encountered when hypnotizing someone? --
Some people are difficult to hypnotize.  When I am on stage, members of the audience can be disruptive.  Some people go so deeply in a trance, they don't accept suggestions readily.  Some people try to fake the hypnotic state.

4.Why  is it possible to hypnotize someone to do one thing but not another?  --   Much of it depends on the skill of the hypnotist.  A very skilled hypnotist can make a hypnotized subject do just about everything [even though many people think otherwise].

5.What kind of unsafe practices exist in the field of hypnosis? -- Mostly by unskilled, untrained hypnotists who try to delve into a person's
psychological past and bring up memories that should not be disturbed.  Also, stunts of trying to make people perform physical feats that they cannot do.

You might want to read my book "Hypnosis Induction Technics" by Charles
Thomas Co, publisher.  You can read about the book at

Thank you for your time in answering these questions.  Your help is
greatly apppreciated.

Sincerely,

Vasanth Siva

Dear Dr. Amazing:

Thank you very much for the information you've provided me with.  It was
extremely valuable in my paper.  My paper was a thesis paper defending the
fact that hypnosis is real but not as powerful as it is commonly believed to be.

If you would like a copy of my paper, please let me know and I'll be happy
to send one.

Thanks Again

Hi Dr. Amazing.  My name is Andy. I am doing a school project on hypnotists and what they do.  I have heard about you and I want to get some good information from a real hypnotist.  I have only a few simple questions.

1.How long does a hypnotist usually have to go to school?

TO BE A STAGE HYPNOTIST - NO FORMAL TRAINING IS NECESSARY.  I LEARNED
FROM A BOOK ON STAGE HYPNOSIS.

TO BE A HYPNOTHERAPIST AND DO PSYCHOLOGIC COUNSELLING VIA HYPNOSIS, IT
WOULD BE ADVISABLE TO TAKE COLLEGE COURSES ON PSYCHOLOGY.  I WOULD SUGGEST
GETTING A MASTERS DEGREE IN PSYCHOLOGY AND THEN TAKE SOME COURSES ON
HYPNOSIS.

MANY HYPNOTHERAPISTS HAVE NOT TAKEN PSYCHOLOGY COURSES, AND I QUESTION
WHETHER THEY HAVE THE SKILLS TO DO HYPNOTHERAPY.  THERE ARE A NUMBER OF
SCHOOLS THAT TEACH HYPNOSIS.  THEY GIVE ALL KINDS OF UNOFFICIAL DEGREES.  IF YOU WOULD LOOK AT THE WEB SITE AT   www.memorysite.com/registry
YOU WILL SEE THAT THEY HAVE AN ALPHABET SOUP OF LETTERS TO STAND FOR
DEGREES.  I WOULDN'T GIVE ANY OF THEM MUCH VALUE.  THE INITIALS JUST LOOK
GOOD.

2.What courses does a hypnotist have to take?

DEPENDS ON THE SCHOOL THAT IS TEACHING HYPNOSIS.  THERE ARE NO
EDUCATIONAL GUIDELINES.

3.Where are jobs available for hypnotists?

IF ONE GETS A MASTERS DEGREE IN PSYCHOLOGY AND TAKES TRAINING IN HYPNOSIS,
THEN THAT PERSON MIGHT DEVELOP A PRIVATE PRACTICE IN HYPNOTHERAPY.  THE
FIELD OF STAGE HYPNOTISTS IS CROWDED.  IN OTHER WORDS, PLANNING ON A CAREER IN HYPNOSIS IS VERY RISKY, AND I WOULDN'T ADVISE CONSIDERING IT.

4.How much money does the average hypnotist make?

A FEW STAGE HYPNOTISTS WHO HAVE DEVELOPED A FOLLOWING CAN MAKE GOOD MONEY.  FOR MOST, THE REWARDS ARE NOT HIGH BECAUSE THE DEMAND FOR SHOWS IS NOT GREAT.

5.What does a hypnotist do?

EITHER COUNSELS A PATIENT PSYCHOLOGICALLY IN A PROFESSIONAL SETTING OR IS A STAGE HYPNOTIST PRESENTING COMEDY SHOWS.

Tell me any other important details about being a hypnotist.

A HYPNOTIST SHOULD HAVE VERY HIGH ETHICS AND MORALS, AS HYPNOTIZED SUBJECTS ARE TO A CERTAIN EXTENT AT THE MERCY OF THE HYPNOTIST.  THE HYPNOTIST MUST AVOID CAUSING HARM TO THE HYPNOTIZED SUBJECT.

I HAVE ANSWERED OTHER QUESTIONS FROM HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS.  YOU MIGHT WANT
TO ACCESS THE WEBSITE   www.memorysite.com/books     AND CLICK ON "MAIL"

Please answer my questions if you have time. Thank you very much.  Email me at Vick849@aol.com  . Please email me before Thursday, my project is due.

GOOD LUCK.

DR. AMAZING
